Director of Public Affairs - Florida

The Director of Public Affairs - Florida will lead KIPP Miami’s government affairs work in Tallahassee and in each Florida region; develop a deep bench of champions throughout the state to promote policies and efforts beneficial to high-performing public charter schools; and support growth to new regions in Florida. The Director will maximize available state and local government fundraising streams to support KIPP Miami students, pave the way for affordable facilities development where relevant and remove obstacles to the opening of new schools and operation of existing schools.

•    Critical thinking/problem solving and analytic skills to make a strong case of support
•    Ability to build relationships with members of varying political parties 
•    Deep understanding of key leaders and elected officials in the education reform movement in Florida and knowledge of Florida legislation impacting charter school students, leaders, and families 
•    7-10 years of experience in public affairs; experience in K-12 education policy is a plus
•    Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred
•    Based in South Florida, but regular travel to Tallahassee

Here’s what you’ll be doing:
Government Affairs: Build relationships in support of KIPP Miami’s policy goals and mission by engaging local, state, and federal elected and governmental officials, including: 

Host school visits with state-level legislators and local elected officials who represent regional KIPP Schools 
• Host meetings with state-level legislators who represent regional KIPP Schools 
• Lead KIPP Miami’s communication with state education agencies related to policy and regulatory matters 
• Develop and manage relationships with local school board members in Miami Dade County and other Florida regions targeted for growth
• Partner with KIPP Miami’s leadership to support federal charter school advocacy and initiatives, and collaborate with external consultants as needed

Fundraising: Support Executive Directors to raise support for the launch and growth of KIPP Miami’s regions 

Apply for and secure State of Florida’s Schools of Hope funds to support growth costs and launch costs 
• Participate in and prepare KIPP Miami’s Senior Team for external meetings as relevant
• Partner with KIPP Miami’s internal teams to ensure adequate information for any grant and funder meetings 

Policy: Develop and execute on KIPP Miami’s policy position and strategy 

Manage and execute KIPP Miami’s advocacy and policy strategy within Tallahassee, in cooperation with KIPP Miami’s Senior Leadership team and Board members, including a minimum of one annual advocacy day during legislative session 
• Provide public testimony on behalf of KIPP Miami during legislative hearings in Tallahassee 
•    Collaborate with KIPP’s family support staff to train parents in advocacy practices and amplify their voices
• Draft responses to regulations on which KIPP Miami wishes to provide comment 
•    Research and propose policy changes that would improve our organizational efficiency
•    Collaborate with KIPP’s real estate team to secure approvals on key school projects

Growth: Support CMO efforts to grow into new Florida regions, and support KIPP Miami’s growth to ensure schools open on time and without preventable challenges 

Prior to new school openings, build relationships with non-funder champions in each new region in Florida; secure meetings and support from 6-12 essential local leaders in order to facilitate future expansion
• Develop a list of “must-win” individuals in key educational, civic, and governmental roles in each region
• Alongside Executive Directors, work with each of these individuals to determine top challenges for KIPP Miami and develop solutions prior to opening schools in new communities 
• Utilize relationships with local leaders to determine neighborhoods of greatest need, most likely challenges to launch, most viable path forward 

Team Management: Manage local community outreach staff in Miami and other new regions targeted for growth.

    • In coordination with senior leaders, set team goals and hold team accountable for meeting goals
